The primary objective of this Europe-wide study is to develop a risk management approach for enterprise systems implementation programs. The project is funded under the EU information Society Technology Programme (IST-2001-35385).

Enterprise system like ERP, CRM, PDM are fundamental to the transformation of the traditional industrial society to E-economy. However, the implementation of these systems is still expensive and haphazard. Moreover, most projects achieved outcome that is different from expected, took longer and cost more. The cost of and difficulties in enterprise systems implementation processes are barriers to rapid adoption of these technology solutions and impede the speed of connecting European enterprises to the information network.

Enterprise systems change companies’ interface to customers and have major impacts on the way that they work internally. The project aims to develop a set of methods and tools to assist enterprises and consultancies to improve enterprise systems implementation. Based on best practice research, they shall be enabled to evaluate the maturity of the company and work out the necessary training, organisation change or infrastructure development that need to be in place before the enterprise systems can go live. Specific research objectives are:
  • A multi-dimensional classification framework for enterprise system implementation cases
  • A catalogue of critical issues for enterprise system implementation based on strategic, organisational, and socio-technical analysis
  • A diagnostic tool and methodology to assess the readiness of an organisation for an enterprise system implementation
  • A repository and a decision support system for implementation preparation and improvement actions
  • BEST service provision business model. For each service element – the diagnostic evaluation as well as the resulting implementation actions – two cost and sales models are established for different European regions: one for large organisations and one for SMEs
