on air - Wireless Leiden node on CeTIM roof
7 Oct 2004

Wireless Leiden is a WIFI (802.11b) network that covers the entire city of Leiden and a rapidly growing area around.

Today the node "Plantsoen" (engl. park, named after the address of CeTIM) is "on air" and provides coverage for the park. The node Plantsoen was sponsored by Anywi.com, a spin-off from wireless Leiden that operates its start-up out of the CeTIM offices. In the early days of wireless Leiden in 2002 CeTIM had sponsored the CeTIM Node.

WIFI technology is known from hotspots and wireless access points, which connect computers to the services of Internet providers. Wireless Leiden is a radical innovation in that it is a fully independent network of cooperating (federated) nodes without Internet provider. Wireless Leiden therefore is as well a living laboratory for research on innovation and virtual organisations.

The network evolves with each new node connecting to two or three neighoring nodes in eyesight. Photo 1 and Photo 2 show sight of the neighboring nodes "Pieterskerk" and "Marten". The area antenna on top of the antenna gives local coverage. Such wireless network nodes can solve a problem of high density hotspots in cities because they do not conflict when their signal range overlaps, but mutually strengthen the network.

Nodes are self-made, because there is no commercial provider. See some pictures, how Henk Uittenbogaard, director Anywi.com prepares the node, and brings the parts onto the roof with prof. Katzy, who then mounts the antenna with the neighbor Charly Beekhuizen to the roof.

The foundation wireless Leiden in all technical, organizational, financial, political, etc. regards supports volunteers who further develop wireless networks. Conform with the idea, the foundation does not own the network nor has other commercial interest. Each node is owned by a vounteer (a private person, a compnay, a school,...) and the about 1500 Euro per node are often paid for by a sponsor.
